ROCHESTER, N.Y. – New security measures are coming to Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte following several large fights over the weekend.

Local law enforcement and lawmakers have announced a plan to address safety concerns.

In a unanimous vote, Monroe County legislators decided to install automated gates at the Ontario Beach parking lot. These gates will prevent cars from entering after the park closes at 10 p.m., aiming to reduce crime.

“There will be four gates installed in the parking lots that are closest to the park itself,” said Legislature President Yversha Roman. “There will be one that has the ability to open after hours.”

Roman said the gates will not include any fees to enter.

“This is one measure to make sure that those parking lots are not being utilized by individuals who are choosing to go to the park once it’s officially closed,” Roman said.

Councilman Sean McCabe of Greece emphasized that more needs to be done to improve safety.

“It’s going to take more than just safety gates to do that,” McCabe said. “There’s got to be other steps proactively. And I mean, part of the issue is there’s a lack of consequences. The Albany Democrats have [it so] nobody’s hold accountable when it comes to crime.”

Law enforcement agencies, including the Rochester Police Department, state troopers, county sheriffs, and city security, plan to increase their presence over the weekends, and during events like Concerts by the Shore on Wednesdays.

“All sorts of enforcement in the parking lots in the beach area to ensure that targeting any sort of groups of juveniles before they’re able to get into a point of creating mischief,” said Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department.

Additionally, an RPD detail will be stationed at the RTS Transit Center on Saint Paul Street in Rochester. They will turn buses around if they see large groups of teens heading to the beach to cause chaos.

The cost of installing the gates is expected to be up to $200,000, but no word yet on when they will be installed.
