England weren’t good enough in a 3-1 defeat to Senegal, but perhaps the VAR wasn’t either.
The Three Lions fell to a first defeat under new manager Thomas Tuchel, coming in a friendly against the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations winners, who managed three unanswered goals after Harry Kane’s early opener.
England ended an international trip with two poor displaysGetty But one moment stunned the players and punditsGettyCrystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr equalised before half time to provoke boos at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground and then Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly completed the upset in the second half.
However, between Senegal’s second and third, the score was temporarily 2-2 but Jude Bellingham’s equaliser was ruled out.
The Real Madrid midfielder prodded in from a Levi Colwill knock-down, but it was then judged to have come off the Chelsea defender’s arm for a handball.
The touch appeared to be high up Colwill’s arm and towards his shoulder, which Kane thinks means it wasn’t a handball.
“If you know the rules, it’s not handball,” he said to ITV post-match.
“It obviously puts us back in the game at 2-2 and maybe we go on and win the game so it is quite a big moment.
“But that’s something to discuss with them (the match officials) afterwards.”
Giving his thoughts, manager Tuchel said: “It looked like it was more the shoulder than the hand.”
Mirroring the frustrations in Nottingham, England and Arsenal great Ian Wright couldn’t understand the call either.
“That’s not deliberate though is it? Pathetic. How’s that deliberate?” he said.
ITVColwill’s touch prompted comment from everyone post-match[/caption]“He’s not even looking. It’s hit where the shirt comes in, for them to disallow that goal is crazy, what’s going on?”
Roy Keane was in agreement, adding: “Not the right decision, very good finish, but the wrong decision.
“You have to react to these moments though and they conceded another goal, you have to roll with it as well.”
Despite Kane’s protestations, he wasn’t making excuses with England booed off for consecutive matches after a 1-0 win against minnows Andorra last weekend.
“Again, not really good enough,” he said. “We again had moments, just with and without the ball we aren’t quite clicking, aren’t quite finding the right passes, finding the right tempo.
“One v one, we’re losing duels, we’re losing just that aggressive nature that we’ve had and we got punished, we’re playing against a good side. We just weren’t good enough today.
“We’re not going to panic. But for sure we know we need to do better.”
