California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) slammed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Monday as hundreds of Marines and thousands of National Guard members were sent to Los Angeles to quell protests.
Newsom said Hegseth's "a joke, everybody knows it, it’s so in over his head, what an embarrassment,” in an interview with Brian Tyler Cohen, a progressive YouTube host.
“That’s this guy’s weakness — masquerading his strength … I don’t even know he masquerades his strength.”
Newsom said the federal response shows there’s been an erosion of the country’s political system of checks and balances.
“There’s one, maybe two branches of the government left, and it sure as hell ain’t the legislature,” he told Cohen.
As Republicans continued to mock the violent outbursts across California, Newsom drew comparisons between Los Angeles and home districts of GOP leaders.
The governor said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was constantly “missing in action,” noting that he represents one of the most “dangerous districts in America.” Johnson's district stretches from Shreveport to nearly the Gulf coast of Louisiana. Shreveport had 52 homicides in 2024, down from 80 the year prior, according to the Advocate.
“Where’s Donald Trump talking about the carnage in Speaker Johnson’s district?” he asked on air.
California leaders sued the Trump administration on Monday over the National Guard's call-up and on Tuesday, Newsom requested an emergency injunction on Trump's deployment of soldiers.
“We’re holding onto hope, founding fathers, three co-equal branches of government, popular sovereignty, rule of law and the courts need to intervene,” Newsom said, lauding successful lawsuits against the Trump administration.
“We’ve won more than we’ve lost, and California sued more than any other state in the country and here we go."
