While Jofra Archer was not named in the squad, he is in contention for the second Test. The right-arm pacer, who has suffered a number of serious injuries in the last couple of years or so, has not played a Test for England since 2021. The last of his 13 Tests was the Ahmedabad Test against India.

Jofra Archer set to return to red-ball cricket:
After missing the ODI series against West Indies and the two games against India A, Jofra Archer is all set to return to red-ball cricket later this month. England Men's selector Luke Wright has revealed that the pacer would make his return in the format for Sussex this month in their second XI fixtures.
"Jof's also trucking along really well actually," said Wright. "The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test. So he'll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test.
Archer's Test career has been pretty much off track for the last four years due to a spate of injuries. In 2021, he suffered an elbow injury and remained on the sidelines for the remainder of the year. In 2022, he also suffered a lower-back stress fracture and missed the T20 World Cup. He returned to action in early 2023 but suffered another injury.
