Rayagada: Bijaya Punem alias Ajay, a Maoist commander with a Rs 4 lakh bounty, surrendered before the police in Rayagada disrict today.
Punem, a member of the banned Bansadhara-Ghumusar-Nagavali (BGN) Division of the CPI (Maoist), surrendered due to the organization’s ideological deviation. He was wanted in multiple cases and had a reward of Rs 4 lakh on his head.
Punem joined the outfit in 2009 and was promoted to Area Commander Member (ACM). In 2024, he took leadership of the Ghumsar Area Committee under the BGN Division. He surrendered with a pistol and eight rounds of ammunition.
Rayagada SP Swathy S Kumar urged other Maoists to join the mainstream, highlighting Odisha’s ongoing efforts to curb insurgency through its Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy.
