Pat McAfee was reportedly advised by the FBI to consider wearing a bulletproof vest following the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk in September 2025.
According to Front Office Sports, which first reported the news on Tuesday, October 27, the FBI gave the ESPN personality the advice the week after Kirk was killed at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The report also cited sources who said McAfee regularly receives threatening messages, including death threats.
The reported warning has come to light after McAfee publicly discussed concerns about his safety following ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast at the University of Utah over the weekend.
On Monday, Oct. 26, McAfee criticized the university on The Pat McAfee Show after its official Instagram account shared a video featuring students impersonating him. In the clip, one student called the sportscaster “corny,” while another described him as “creepy.”
McAfee said the university’s decision to share the video shortly before his appearance on campus made him uncomfortable.
“The university puts that out? Like as I’m about to go out and do an infomercial for the place?” he said. “And then I’m walking in front of thousands of these people. This is how the university feels about it? It’s an uncomfortable feeling.”
During the same discussion, McAfee alluded to Kirk’s death, questioning why a university would amplify content that could encourage people to dislike him given what had happened at another Utah college gathering.
“I thought to myself, has anything, like, really scary happened at a college gathering in the state of Utah recently?” he said.
Kirk, a conservative political activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025.
Following McAfee’s comments, ESPN issued a statement supporting the broadcaster and acknowledging concerns about the safety of its on-air team.
“The safety and security of our on-air team, crew and fans is paramount at College GameDay,” an ESPN spokesperson said. “We are committed to ensuring a safe environment, and given the very real threats that members of our team face, we take issues involving their safety seriously. We support Pat and recognize the very real and valid concerns he has around safety and security.”
The University of Utah also apologized for the social media video, saying it had “missed the mark” and taking responsibility for the post.
“We sincerely apologize for creating any perception that Pat was unsafe or unwelcome on our campus,” the university said, adding that McAfee and the College GameDay crew were welcome to return.
People reported on Wednesday, Oct. 28, that the FBI declined to comment when reached by the outlet.
