Having long called Vladimir Putin a “friend,” over the weekend Trump described his Russian counterpart in ways we had not heard before.

On social media he claimed Putin had gone “absolutely CRAZY!”

And while his fury could galvanise Trump into more robust action against Russia, it could also push the US to give up even trying to help solve the conflict, leaving other allies like the UK carrying the can.

This comes after Ukraine and Russia met for peace talks in Istanbul this month and agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners of war, small steps towards a peace Trump had once promised would be easy to achieve.

In his first term, his administration brokered the genuinely historic Abraham Accords, which saw relations established between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan.

Trump was not the first US president to think he could do a deal with Putin: George W Bush famously said he trusted him after getting “a sense of his soul.”

Trump’s refusal to read history has been compounded by his palpable disdain for Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has in recent days blamed the US’s silence for encouraging Putin to attack.

This is a delicate moment. Zelensky is now hoping Trump will be angry enough that he keeps backing Ukraine and puts added pressure on Putin to try and force him to make a deal.

That would be the moment when the UK, France, Germany and other nations would have to be good to their word and try to fill the gap militarily and financially created by the absence of America.

Yet it is a gamble everyone would wish to avoid.
