Witney Carson Defends Guillermo Rodriguez’s Success Amid ‘DWTS’ Elimination Controversy: ‘He Deserves It’ ...Saudi Arabia

Longtime Dancing with the Stars pro Witney Carson was stuck between a rock and a hard place on Tuesday, September 29. As she and her celebrity partner, Guillermo Rodriguez, happily survived another week of the competition, her friend and colleague Britt Stewart was eliminated from season 35 with her partner, ’90s music sensation Taylor Hanson.

The surprising result left Stewart choking back tears on the dance floor, and sent a shock wave across America, with many fans irate over seeing Stewart eliminated so soon in the competition, for the fourth season in a row.

Carson was heartbroken to see Britt go, which she shared in a sweet message to her on social media shortly after the show. But as online backlash grew, including widespread speculation that the shock on Carson’s face over the results signaled that she’d actually been hoping to be sent home, she decided to set the record straight and stick up for Rodriguez.

In a set of selfie videos Carson posted to her Instagram Stories, she explained, “So, every week, Guillermo and I have been put in the bottom three, which doesn’t necessarily mean all those couples have the lowest votes, but it does mean that you don’t get to celebrate that you’re safe. You only get to hear who’s going home.”

Carson said that each time a new duo is cut, she can’t help but express her shock, followed by her “excitement” about making it through again. “Those two emotions are existing at once,” she said.

“I think it goes without saying, but here I am saying it,” Carson continued. “I am truly so grateful to continue on in this competition week after week with Guillermo because he really deserves it. He is genuinely a kind person. He genuinely wants to get better. He never gives up. Any time I’m resting in rehearsals, he’s practicing. Anytime we’re at (the set) and we’re just hanging out, he’s practicing.”

Although Rodriguez may look far less coordinated or flexible as a first-time dancer, Carson insisted, “That is his best. What you see on Tuesdays is his very best, and I think there’s a lot to say about someone who may not have the skills but is willing to learn and put in the work. That’s an amazing thing, and he deserves it.”

Each duo’s fate is decided by the DWTS judges’ scores combined with viewers’ live votes; fans have cast so many votes for Rodriguez and Carson that they’ve been able to overcome receiving the lowest scores from the judges each of the first three weeks. On Yacht Rock Night, they received 15 out of 30 possible points from the judges, while Britt and Hanson earned 18.

Rodriguez seems as surprised as anyone to still be in the competition, telling his social media followers that dancing the foxtrot was “so scary.” After the show, he flew from L.A. to New York so he could appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which is broadcasting from Brooklyn this week. The next day, Carson shared in her Stories that she had an “early morning flight to Brooklyn” so she can rehearse there with Rodriguez.

Dancing with the Stars broadcasts live each Tuesday night; with week four airing on October 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
