The president of San Diego State University initiated a hiring freeze effective immediately for most positions on campus following cuts to federal and state funding.
SDSU faculty and staff learned about the hiring freeze in an email from President Adela de la Torre on March 20.
Torre said in the message the California State University system is facing a likely 7.95% budget reduction, equivalent to $375 million, in the next fiscal year basedon Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget plan in January.
“Without a doubt, higher education is today facing some of the most incredible challenges we have seen in decades,” the email said.
In addition to the hiring freeze, the university president said there will be a net reduction of at least 3% of all management positions in an effort to minimize the impact on critical staff and faculty.
“This effort is designed to help us meet budget reduction targets while preserving and protecting our current workforce and priorities, to include support for our undergraduate students, graduate students, instructors, research and community-facing strategic projects,” the president wrote.
According to the email, a 5% budget increase promised to the school by the governor will be delayed for two years.
SDSU anticipated the budget shortfall last year, the email said, and implemented a $10 million base budget reduction across all SDSU divisions that went into effect in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
To shoulder the $10 million reduction, each university division reduced costs by cutting non-essential travel, deferring multi-year projects and more in order to avoid campus-wide layoffs, according to the message.
De la Torre said the combination of decreased government funds and reduced level of funded enrollment growth could cause the university’s budget deficit over the next three years to reach $44 million.
“We recognize that every member of our community plays a significant role in maintaining our university’s operations, and our goal is to ensure that we are making thoughtful, responsible decisions in light of financial constraints affecting campuses statewide and nationally.”
SDSU currently enrolls nearly 38,000 students.
