Dogs of all breeds and sizes were wagging their tails and greeting everyone Saturday morning at Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley at the Greeley Kennel Club’s second annual Performance Weekend.
The first day of the two-day event featured events such as sniff ‘n go nose work, obedience show and go, FastCAT and other fun events.

After Inky and Ronan, two wire-haired dachshunds, completed the race, their owner, Christine Kim, greeted them with hugs and congratulatory belly rubs.
Kim drove Inky and Ronan up from Aurora to perform in the Greeley event. In addition to having fun, she said, it’s a great way to enjoy the day with other dogs and their owners.

(Jim Rydbom/Staff Photographer)Lafeyette resident Ali Bizzul, Kim’s friend, brought her miniature dachshund, Brock, out to the event. At just 11 months old, Brock loves people and chasing the ball around.
“He’s super ball crazy,” Bizzul said. “He loves playing, and this is just a way to kind of encourage his ability to have a lot of fun. He’s having a great day. These guys are having a great day.”
The Greeley Kennel Club is required to host the event, or match, to keep its license with the American Kennel Club, allowing the Greeley Kennel Club to host the conformation show at its All-Breed Dog Show in August.
Founded in 1884, the American Kennel Club receives more than 3 million entries to its 22,000 yearly sports and events.
A new event at Performance Weekend was fetch ‘n go. Dog owners tossed a ball or toy bumper between objects set up adjacent to FastCAT. The dogs returned the object to their owners to highlight their retrieving ability.

(Jim Rydbom/Staff Photographer)Bashor said the FastCAT scores are based on how fast the dogs are running. Smaller dogs, like Inky and Ronan, are given a handicap and awarded extra points because little legs can only move so fast. Each dog can earn various titles at Performance Weekend such as novice, intermediate and advanced. Bizzul hoped Brock would take home his novice fetch title.
Those titles serve well for the dogs at future events and shows, according to Bashor. Moreover, the weekend is about bringing dogs and the dog owner community together to have fun and show off what their best four-legged friends can do.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Greeley Kennel Club. Bashor said the All-Breed Dog Show is set to feature events from Aug. 16-18. at Island Grove to commemorate the anniversary.
