User Experience
I’m always impressed with how Smartish presents their products. They are in fun, quirky packaging. Inside the box, there is a message that says ‘open sesame.’ When you lift up those flaps, you will find the Charge Island and its cable below it. To get started, I just pulled the Charge Island out and plugged it into a high-powered adapter (Anker 737 120W Charger). The only other item plugged in was my AirPods Max.
I set my phone on the charger (it was in a case) and let it charge for 10 minutes. I checked it and noticed that it had only gained 4%. With it being connected to a 120W power adapter I thought this was an exceptionally low charging rate. So, I removed the case (which was MagSafe-compatible) and started its charging again. After another 10 minutes, I checked it again and it had only gained 6%. That was moderately better than with the case on, but still not where I expected it to be. So, I changed the power adapter to a 140W Anker charging adapter that has a display on it with the data about the wattage on it.
Right when I plugged it in, the adapter’s display showed 4W as the power output. After a minute or two, it showed 7-9W. After 10 minutes had elapsed, the phone had gained 6% and the display showed 8-9W. I decided to put the case back on and try it again. As it turned out, this made it possible for the phone to reach 11W and gain 2% within 4 minutes.

I would say that part of the reason could be because the iPhone 16 Pro that I was charging doesn’t sit flush with the charging pad. I tried laying it flat and it made it so that the charging coil wasn’t in the optimum place for the charging pad. I still like the Charge Island because of its slim profile and easy charging option, but I wish the charging rate were more consistent — no matter what the condition is.
Conclusion
The Smartish Charge Island offers a simple, clutter-free solution for wireless charging with a clean design and easy setup. It’s perfect for dropping your phone after a long day without fumbling for cables. However, the inconsistent charging speeds, even under ideal conditions, hold it back from being the ultimate wireless charger. While it excels in looks and convenience, those seeking consistently fast charging may find themselves wanting more. For casual, overnight charging, it’s still a smart addition to your space—just don’t expect lightning-fast results.
