A gang member already sentenced to prison for the fatal shooting of a young woman at a La Jolla house party was sentenced today to 14 years in prison for taking part in a racketeering conspiracy with other gang members that involved armed robberies and sex trafficking, among other serious crimes.

Odyssey Carrillo, 23, was the last of nine defendants sentenced in the case, in which federal prosecutors charged the defendants under Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, better known as the RICO Act.

The sentence Carrillo will serve on the federal charge will run concurrently with his state sentence.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that in his plea agreement, Carrillo admitted to taking part in the armed robberies of two local jewelry stores, one in San Carlos in January 2019 and one in National City in February 2019.

Carrillo was also sentenced last November to 35 years in state prison for the June 23, 2019, death of 20-year-old Nina Silver, who was among a group of people struck by gunfire while standing in an alley in the 7500 block of Cuvier Street, near La Jolla Boulevard.

Prosecutors allege gang motivations were behind the 12:30 a.m. shooting and that Silver was not the intended target. Silver was shot in the back, while three other victims were shot in the face, chest and arm, respectively, but survived.

Carrillo was initially charged with murder in that case, but pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
