COSTCO shoppers have begun to notice their groceries costing more as the warehouse club hikes the prices of six beloved items.

Although all six fan-favorites have risen by $1 or more, some members are surprisingly grateful to see the price increases, claiming it averts even worse alternatives.

Inflation continues to hit consumers hard, with prices rising 0.5% from December to last month and 3% from January 2024 to the same time this year, according to a BLS report from Wednesday.

Surging costs are especially taking a toll at the grocery store, where prices have climbed 1.9% year-over-year.

Costco members have recently noticed inflation firsthand during their grocery runs, pointing out price hikes on several popular food products.

One of the items that has taken a hit is the 12-count Kirkland Butter Croissants, one of Costco’s most sought-after bakery products.

“Croissants are a dollar up :(,” shared a sad member on Reddit over the weekend, paired with a picture of the new $6.99 price tag.

Costco previously raised the price of the beloved bakery staple three years ago from $4.99 to $5.99.

While several shoppers were up in arms over the new price, one member explained why the cost increase was actually a good thing.

“If this is just general sadness over inflation, I get it. But as it pertains to Costco, I’m somewhat relieved when I see prices going up, because the alternative is they stop selling those items or just reduce overall quality – and they seem to have taken those options a lot more over the years,” wrote the Redditor.

ON THE RISE

Although Costco members have admitted that its croissants are still a good deal at the new $6.99 price point, they pointed out that cost increases have been happening quite frequently at the chain lately.

“Prime ribeye cap steaks went from $26/lb to $31/lb. Couldn’t find a pack for under 100 now :(,” complained one Reddit user.

“Monsters have steadily been $36 for a 24 pack (mixed or white) and they jumped to $40,” noted a second shopper.

Others shared that packs of avocados had also climbed in price by $3 and coffee had risen by $1.

Costco’s price hikes have also been felt at the food court, where one shopper reported that soda went up 10 cents a couple weeks ago.

When the chain’s Kirkland croissants jumped from $4.99 to $5.99 in 2022, members reported similar price increases for products such as water bottles, cooking oil, bagels, and muffins.

“As it pertains to Costco, I’m somewhat relieved when I see prices going up, because the alternative is they stop selling those items or just reduce overall quality – and they seem to have taken those options a lot more over the years.”

Costco shoppers have speculated that the recent price hikes are in response to potential tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

The newly re-elected president signed executive orders earlier this month to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, as well as a 10% tariff on Chinese imports.

Taxes on goods from China are currently in effect, while the tariffs on Canada and Mexico have been delayed and are still under negotiation.

“Anytime something gets tariffed prices rise across the board,” wrote one shopper.

“And even if the tariffs are repealed, those prices will never go back down, because consumers already got used to paying the higher price, and learned to make sacrifices elsewhere to afford essentials like food,” speculated another.

Costco CFO Gary Millerchip alluded to the price increases in December, stating that Trump’s proposed tariffs could affect the cost of some products, although he did not specify which items might be impacted.

One grocery staple that has seen a noticeable price surge is eggs, which are currently facing supply shortage issues due to the bird flu outbreak.

Costco members have fought over the product as an entire section of eggs vanishes in 10 minutes due to “panic buying.”
