Jayden Daniels had a big night on Sunday Night Football.
He led the Washington Commanders to a 30-24 overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons, clinching a playoff berth for the franchise. It will be Washington’s first appearance in the playoffs since 2020 when the Commanders made the playoffs with a 7-9 record.
Washington is already 11-5 this season, marking the first time the franchise has won 11+ games in a regular season since 1991. Here’s the play that clinched Washington’s playoff berth:

— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) December 30, 2024Daniels also made a bit of history on Sunday night. He ended the game against Atlanta with 864 rushing yards, which was enough to break the rookie quarterback rushing record that was previously held by ex-Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Griffin shared a message of support for Jayden Daniels after the game:
I wanted Jayden Daniels to break my rookie rushing record because I’m not about rooting against the next generation. He EARNED IT. He is the FUTURE. Some of these old heads need to stop drinking all that haterade and lift up these young guys instead of tearing them down. pic.twitter.com/SesP9KTdpM
— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) December 30, 2024In addition to his work on the ground, Daniels has also thrown for 3,530 yards and 25 touchdowns so far this season. Since 1970, the only other rookie quarterbacks to hit those benchmarks are Justin Herbert, Baker Mayfield and Peyton Manning.
Daniels is expected to take home Offensive Rookie of the Year honors when they are announced after the season has concluded.
The last former LSU player to win the award was wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase in 2021.
