The two-time Academy Award winner revealed in his post on Instagram on Sunday, Dec. 29, that he just hit 49 years of sobriety.
“Forty-nine years ago today, I stopped,” Hopkins said before he mimed taking a drink. “And I was having such fun,” he recalled. “But then I realized I was in big, big trouble, because I couldn’t remember anything, and I was driving a car, drunk out of my skull.”
“So, I got it,” he said. “I phoned up a group of people like me, alcoholic, and that was it. Over. Anyway, I’ve had more fun these 49 years than ever.”

The Father actor said it was when he decided to get sober that he discovered he was “not unique,” adding, “There are thousands of people around like me.”
After once again urging those in need of help to seek it out, Hopkins concluded his video by blowing a kiss at the camera. “With that, happy New Year,” he said with a smile.
