Anthony Hopkins celebrated a major life milestone with a new video that he posted on social media in late December.
The two-time Academy Award winner revealed in his post on Instagram on Sunday, Dec. 29, that he just hit 49 years of sobriety.

“Forty-nine years ago today, I stopped,” Hopkins said before he mimed taking a drink. “And I was having such fun,” he recalled. “But then I realized I was in big, big trouble, because I couldn’t remember anything, and I was driving a car, drunk out of my skull.”
It was on that “fateful day” that Hopkins, who will celebrate his 87th birthday on Tuesday, Dec. 31, said he realized that he “needed help.”
“So, I got it,” he said. “I phoned up a group of people like me, alcoholic, and that was it. Over. Anyway, I’ve had more fun these 49 years than ever.”

The Silence of the Lambs star then offered some advice for others who might be struggling the way he once did. “If you do have a problem—having fun is wonderful, having a drink is fine,” he said. “But if you are having a problem with the booze, there is help. It’s not a terrible deal. It’s a condition. If you’re allergic to alcohol, get some help. There’s plenty of help around.”
The Father actor said it was when he decided to get sober that he discovered he was “not unique,” adding, “There are thousands of people around like me.”
Looking back on the last nearly 50 years, Hopkins said he has “had a wonderful life.” With his 87th birthday fast approaching, the actor said he is currently celebrating his “unexpectedly long life.”
After once again urging those in need of help to seek it out, Hopkins concluded his video by blowing a kiss at the camera. “With that, happy New Year,” he said with a smile.
