Georgia ended with a score of 3-1 in favor of Turkey. This victory was not only significant for the Turkish team but also for their fans and the country as a whole. The match showcased the skill and determination of the Turkish players, who demonstrated exceptional teamwork and strategy throughout the game.

One key factor in Turkey's success was their strong defense, which effectively thwarted many of Georgia's offensive attempts. The Turkish team also displayed impressive offensive prowess, scoring three goals against their opponents. This balanced performance highlights the depth of talent within the Turkish squad and bodes well for their future matches.

Türkiye dominated possession with 56%, completed more passes (510 to Georgia’s 377), and had a higher accuracy rate (89.0% to Georgia’s 86.0%). They created more big chances (6 to 5) and took more total shots (22 to 14), yet Georgia’s efficiency and resilience turned the tide in their favor. The Expected Goals (xG) metric also favored Türkiye, who generated 2.7 xG compared to Georgia’s 1.59, highlighting their profligacy in front of goal.

Mert Gunok, who should have done better in covering his near post.

Turkey looked livelier in the second half and controlled the action again, cornering Georgia with their relentless high pressure while still leaving themselves open to counters on both wings.

The 19-year-old Güler, coming into the tournament fresh from a run of goals for Real Madrid, scored after 65 minutes, curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Georgia pressed for a late equaliser but, with Mamardashvili coming up for a series of corners, Kerem Akturkoglu broke away and passed into an empty net in added time to make it 3-1.

The goal also gave Turkey the edge in a close contest and he will now look to remain a driving force for a side that reached the Euro 2008 semi-finals.

Defeat was harsh on Georgia, who created history was created after Sagnol’s men beat Greece in a penalty shootout in the play-off final back in March.

The French boss insisted his side would "give it everything" in their first major tournament - and that was exactly what they did from the first minute.

They will take plenty of positives into their next game, despite leaving Dortmund with no points.
