Bears 30, Patriots 24: Caleb Williams, Cairo Santos, and a Big Bag Of Onions ...Middle East

If you had any questions about whether or not the Chicago Bears were legit, I think they were answered on Thursday night at Soldier Field. Caleb Williams and the gang emerged triumphant on Thursday Night Football, taking down the New England Patriots in primetime.

FINAL: Bears 30, Patriots 24 (ESPN Box Score)

Thoughts After a Bears Win On Thursday Night Football

Chicago’s QB1 outdueled his counterpart in New England by completing 22 of 33 passes (66.7%) for 308 yards. He threw two touchdowns and posted a 116.7 passer rating. The big difference in this one was that Williams didn’t throw an interception, while Drake Maye’s red-zone pick (1) ended what could have been a scoring drive for the Pats and (2) was followed immediately by a Bears touchdown. In a game that was decided by one score, that pick is going to gnaw at Maye, the Patriots, and that fan base. Oh, to listen in on WEEI this weekend… Cairo Santos deserves a game ball for nailing the 58-yard field goal to ice the game. It takes some real cojones to drill that kick after just missing from 53 yards out on the previous possession. Santos made two other field goals, which proved to be crucial in a game that was ultimately decided by six points. That said, his numbers are trending in the wrong direction. I’m not a kicking expert, but if something is out of whack with his mechanics, then I hope he uses the mini-bye to get things right. Otherwise, this front office would be wise to kick the tires on some guys who can come in for a workout.

CHICAGO BEARS INSTANT GRADES — WEEK 7

Kudos to Rome Odunze for bouncing back from some tough moments in the first half to come up with some of the biggest catches of the game down the stretch. Don’t get me wrong. I understand why fans are down on Odunze. He hasn’t lived up to the billing of a top-10 pick. But QB1 still trusts him, which makes me want to trust him. That trust was paid off in a big way as Odunze finished with 4 catches and 69 receiving yards. Plus, he had a huge block that helped spring a huge catch by Luther Burden III. As much as I love watching Kyler Gordon (3 solo tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles-for-loss, 1 quarterback hit) come hard off the edge, I can’t bring myself to believe that what he is doing is sustainable. That is a roundabout way of saying that this front office needs to upgrade the defensive line ahead of the Nov. 10 NFL Trade Deadline. More on that tomorrow after we get a full night of sleep tonight and have at least one (1) cup of Café Bustelo. Three Bears

A look at the big names from Thursday’s win against the Patriots.

Caleb Williams — These are QB1’s numbers since returning to the lineup: 52/69, 613 passing yards, 3 TD, 0 INT, 116.4 passer rating, and a 2-0 record. Williams makes magic happen every week. He makes me believe in the impossible whenever he has the ball in his hand. This isn’t to say he is perfect or infallable. After all, he took a stupid sack that I thought took the team out of field goal range. Thankfully, Cairo Santos bailed everyone out by drilling a career-long 58-yard field goal. D’Andre Swift — RB1 went down with an injury early, limping off the field in a way that made me scramble to see what running backs were available behind him on the depth chart. But not only did Swift return to the game, he finished with 26 touches (22 carries, 4 catches) and 90 scrimmage yards (78 rushing yards, 12 receiving yards). Swift has gone from being viewed as a perimeter threat to an every down grinder. Who saw this coming before the start of the 2025 season? Luther Burden III — It’s a real shame he didn’t get any action in the second half because he could have put up an all-time performance if he did. Instead, he’ll have to settle for 4 catches, 130 receiving yards, and a touchdown. Burden continues to be the biggest steal of the 2025 NFL Draft. What’s Next?

WEEK 8: Monday, Nov. 2 vs. the Seattle Seahawiks (7:15 p.m. CT at Lumen Field)

After a short turnaround before facing the defending AFC champs, the Bears get extra rest before traveling to Seattle to square off against the regining Super Bowl champs. Given the injury situation (get well soon, Cole Kmet!) and the need to sharpen some things up, everyone at Halas Hall could use the extra time for rest and recovery before getting back in the lab.
