Well, that was a wild one. It felt like the Bears were firmly in control early, but they could never quite put the Pats away. I know these two teams can’t meet again until the Super Bowl, but that game felt like a playoff game. Two good teams, with two very good quarterbacks making plays back and forth.

Ultimately, the Bears came out on top. That was a heck of a win, but I guarantee you the Bears will watch the film and believe that they could have made things a little easier on themselves.

Bears Instant Grades

Offense

QB Caleb Williams | B+

A really, really solid performance from Caleb tonight. He was outstanding early and made some big throws late. The only thing keeping him from the “A” was taking the late sack that brought Cario Santos’ game-icing field goal attempt to 58 yards from what should have been about 47.

RB D’Andre Swift | B

Admirable effort for him tonight. Not his flashiest performance, but he was clearly gutting through some injuries on a short week and ran his tail off.

WR Rome Odunze | A

Rome was in some crosshairs early after a bad drop and OPI on the same play, but he made some MASSIVE catches late to continue the drive that led to Cairo Santos’ 58-yard field goal. Extra credit for recovering the onside kick.

WR Luther Burden III | B+

Great first half, but didn’t see him in the second much at all. He’s developing into a legitimate number one wideout. Weird we didn’t see him as involved in the second half, but he was electric early on.

TE Cole Kmet | C+

Didn’t factor into the pass game much, but did a fine job blocking. Really sucked seeing him get hurt at the end of the night.

TE Colston Loveland | B

He made some huge catches, scored, and looked to be Caleb’s safety blanket quite a bit again. But there were also a couple drops that can’t happen.

Offensive Line | C

Run blocking was ok, but probably not up to their standards. I don’t think they did a great job of protecting Caleb tonight, and there were a couple of clear blown protections.

Defense

Defensive Line | C+

They just looked like a shorthanded bunch tonight. Even with the extra pressure, the Bears defense struggled to get home. I would have liked to see the interior DL win some of the one-on-one matchups they got on the inside with backup guards, but they didn’t nearly as much as they should have.

Linebackers | C+

D’Marco Jackson had the interception, which was nice. Devin Bush made a pretty nice play early on a screen to the outside, as well. They were part of the group that struggled to get home, though.

Secondary | D

Jaylon Johnson was just awful again. Not only has he slowed a step or two, but the lack of effort in open-field tackling was absolutely eye-opening. Cornerback has become the Bears’ biggest position of need, unfortunately, and if Malik Muhammed is going to miss any sort of time, it’s a pretty desperate need.

Special Teams

K Cairo Santos | B

Cairo Santos is the living epitome of the “just when I think I’m out, he pulls me back in” GIF.

P Tory Taylor | A

Thought he did a great job tonight and had a few big boots.

Bears Coaching

Ben Johnson | B-

I don’t think this was Ben Johnson’s best game. The Bears offense did some good things, but they got entirely too cute at times and left points on the board.

Dennis Allen | C+

Look. The Bears defense got beat tonight at times. But this is kind of what I’ve been calling for all year. Send pressure, and if you get beat, you get beat. Sometimes they got home (they should have gotten home more than they did). Sometimes they didn’t. When they didn’t, Drake Maye beat them a few times. But this type of aggression is how the Bears’ defense can succeed with the current personnel. They need to get home more, but they’re going to have to live and die with chaos. Now it’s on Ryan Poles to go get this unit some help.
