The announcement of Alabama football coach Nick Saban's retirement has sent shockwaves throughout the sports world. Known as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, Saban's decision to step down marks the end of an era for the Crimson Tide.
During his tenure at Alabama, Saban led the team to unprecedented success, winning six national championships and consistently dominating their conference rivals. His meticulous attention to detail and relentless pursuit of perfection made him a revered figure in the world of college football.
Saban spent 28 years as a college head coach at Toledo (1990), Michigan State (1995-99), LSU (2000-04) and Alabama (2007-23). He won seven national titles in those 28 years, his first at LSU in 2003 before capturing six championships at Alabama (2009, 2011-12, 2015, 2017 and 2020). He also coached the Miami Dolphins for two seasons (2005-06).
Alabama is fortunate to have had him leading our football program for the past 17 seasons," said Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. "Throughout his career as a head coach, his teams have won seven national championships, 11 conference championships and 312 games, and he's developed an NCAA-record 49 NFL first-round draft picks and, most importantly, hundreds of college graduates. He is the consummate coach, mentor and leader, and his impact is felt far beyond the football field.
"Coach Saban and Ms. Terry have touched countless lives in our community and the state of Alabama with the work they've done through the Nick's Kids Foundation. While his time as our coach may have come to an end, his legacy will live on forever. What an honor it has been for us to have a front-row seat to one of the best to ever do it. A truly remarkable career for Coach Saban."
SEC Championship, and really, really proud of this group," according to The Associated Press. "I just wish that I could have done more as a coach to help them be successful and help them finish, and all we can do now is learn from the lessons that sometimes failings bring to us."
"Our ideal candidate will be strong in recruiting and relationship building, player development, excel in Xs and Os and have the overall ability to lead this historic program," Byrne said. "There will be plenty of rumors out there during this process. Next time I talk publicly will be to announce our new coach. If you don't hear it from me, don't believe it."
Alabama's odds to win next season's national championship moved from 6-1 to 8-1 at ESPN BET after Saban's retirement was reported. The Crimson Tide have the third-shortest odds, behind Georgia and Ohio State.
