Ethan Chen, a finalist at the 2026 Futures Championships, has announced his verbal commitment to swim for New York University beginning in the fall of 2027.

A Texas native, Chen is a senior at Clements High School in Sugarland and has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming and diving team for the past three years. In addition to swimming for Clements, he also trains year-round with First Colony Swim Team, where he primarily specializes in back and fly.
Chen turned in a series of top performances at the 2025 Gulf Southern Senior Championship in December, posting seven personal best times and earning a second swim in four events. He took 2nd in the 100 fly (49.93 – PB), 6th in the 100 back (50.90), 13th in the 50 free (21.45 – PB) and 33rd in the 200 IM (1:52.98 – PB). He also contested the 200 back (1:58.98 – SB), 100 breast (59.13 – PB) and 400 IM (4:23.04 – SB). Chen helped his team to a victory in the 400 free relay and 200 medley relay, leading off both races in a personal best time of 47.00 and 23.57, respectively. He turned in another top performance on the 800 free relay, leading off in a lifetime best time of 1:45.68 to help First Colony Swim Team to an 8th-place finish.
Chen qualified for the Texas State Championships his sophomore and junior year, earning a second swim in two events at the 2026 UIL 6A State Championships. He placed 8th in the 100 back (50.54) and 13th in the 100 fly (50.43) A few weeks earlier, he set lifetime bests in both events at the UIL District 20-6A Championships; he won the 100 back (49.46) and 100 fly (49.59) and clocked a personal best time of 46.87 in the 100 free as the leadoff on the 400 free relay.
At the Futures Championships in Austin (LCM) in July, Chen earned a second swim in two races and set a new personal best time in two events. He placed 16th in the 100 back (59.64) after posting a best time of 59.23 during prelims, and he finished 29th in the 50 back (29.68 – PB). He also contested the 200 back (2:15.14), 50 fly (27.26), 100 fly (59.55) and 200 IM (2:16.42 – SB).

The Violets sent 13 men on to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships, where they again claimed the runner-up spot.
Based on the results from the 2026 UAA Championships, Chen would have landed in the ‘A’ final in the 100 back, the ‘B’ final in the 200 back and 100 fly and the ‘C’ final in the 400 IM, putting him in a position to score some points for NYU. With another full season to go before he joins the team, it remains to be seen exactly how the roster will shakeout, but Chen should be a strong contributor for the Violets.
On choosing to attend and swim for NYU, Chen said “Between the excellent and supportive team, elite academics, and being in NYC, it’s exactly where I want to be.”
Currently set to join Chen in NYU’s class of 2031 are Brant Berg, Jeffrey Chang, Rhett Walker and Christian Perez, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
