2023 NFL week 9: Packers defeat Rams (20-3)

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Green Bay Packers have opened the 2023 season with an uncharacteristic 2-5 record and look to turn around their season at home on Sunday against the 3-5 Los Angeles Rams. Green Bay lost a home game against Minnesota in Week 8, 24-10, while the Rams lost big at Dallas, 43-20. The Packers have won three straight in the rivalry and eight of the last nine matchups dating back to 2007. Green Bay won this matchup 24-12 last season. The Packers are 3-4 against the spread, while the Rams are 4-3-1 ATS in 2023.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will test his injured thumb before Sunday’s kickoff, but the writing is on the wall: Los Angeles will be without its veteran starter.

Brett Rypien gets the call, meaning this game has the look and feel of perhaps the ugliest game of Week 9’s early slate. On the other side, Packers quarterback Jordan Love has scuffled his way through his first half-season as a starter.

RB Aaron Jones had 20 carries for 73 yards and a TD, plus four receptions for 26 yards, for a total of 99 yards from scrimmage and a lost fumble. RB AJ Dillon added nine carries for 40 yards. Rookie WR Jayden Reed had three catches for 19 yards and added a 21-yard run on an end-around. Rookie RB Emanuel Wilson added four carries for 43 yards in mop-up duty to give the Packers 184 total rushing yards on the day.

Rams, backup QB Brett Rypien, playing in place of the injured Matthew Stafford, was 13-of-28 for 130 yards with an INT for a 45.2 passer rating. Packers rookie S Anthony Johnson Jr. had the interception, off a deflection by CB Jaire Alexander. Rypien also lost a fumble early in the game that set up the Packers' first points.

Interestingly enough, the Packers continue to throw the ball -- this time successfully. Love hit receiver Christian Watson for a 37-yard gain.

Jones entered the red zone with a three-yard rush on first down. On the next play, tight end Luke Musgrave finished the job with a score.

A few plays later, Rypien and the Rams turned the ball over on downs.
