Lionel Messi maintained his record of scoring in every game for Inter Miami CF as his new team cruised into the Leagues Cup semifinals with a 4-0 win over Charlotte FC in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Friday.
Messi's eighth goal in five games since his arrival came with just four minutes remaining and with Miami already three goals up for the perfect finale for the close to 22,000 in attendance at DRV PNK Stadium.
Inter Miami will travel to face last year's Eastern Conference champions Philadelphia Union on Tuesday as they seek to continue their remarkable turnaround since welcoming the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner.
During the 4-0 rout of Charlotte in the Leagues Cup quarterfinal, Messi danced past two defenders with sheer ease, bamboozling them to the point of colliding with one another.
Of course, the reaction both inside DRV PNK Stadium and on social media were of amazement.
Messi scored an eighth goal in five games with his new club, grabbing the fourth goal of Miami’s 4-0 win over Charlotte FC on Friday night.
Josef Martinez and Robert Taylor also scored for Miami with Charlotte’s Adilson Malanda adding an own goal.
With his latest goal, Messi is in sole lead of the Leagues Cup golden boot race.
Next they face Philadelphia Union in the semi-finals.
Messi, 36, joined Miami's Major League Soccer team for a reported $50 million to $60 million per year. The league added a seven-time Ballon d'Or winner with more than 800 goals in club and international play.
He had just won the World Cup this past winter for his home country of Argentina and hasn't cooled off since.
"We look forward to hosting the greatest player in the history of the sport in our building. I think it will definitely be the loudest Subaru Park will ever be," Curtin said. "And again, it's a great matchup and if we play like tonight, we'll be in big trouble."
Querétaro FC on Friday night to reach the semifinal.
Al Nassr defender Abdulelah Al-Amri was sent off in the second half before Nawaf Boushal was given his marching orders while on the bench for arguing with an official, but they held on to take the game to extra time.
Ronaldo then doubled the lead in the first half of extra time when he pounced on a rebound off the crossbar and headed home with the goalkeeper off his line.
There were concerns, however, when Ronaldo was carted off the field with an apparent injury after a collision in the second period of extra time -- just two days before their Saudi Pro League opener against Al Ettifaq.
