Formula 1 driver Lando Norris had a smashing victory celebration in Brazil — literally.
The McLaren driver, 26, found himself in a sharp predicament on Sunday, November 8, after winning the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil. While celebrating on the podium at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, Norris accidentally shattered his champagne bottle while attempting his signature post-race celebration.
After receiving his trophy and celebrating alongside fellow podium finishers Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, Norris slammed the bottom of his champagne bottle against the podium floor, hoping to send the bubbly spraying into the air as he’s done to celebrate P1s in the past. Unfortunately (and, though I’m no mathematician, I’d argue inevitably), the bottle broke on impact, leaving the 2025 Formula 1 World Champion holding the neck of the shattered glass bottle in shock.
Even more unfortunately, when Norris took a step away from the broken glass, he stepped into a cold spark machine’s line of fire, sending sparks crackling along the side of his cap.
Fortunately, neither the sparks nor the broken bottle appear to have caused any injuries, and Norris took Verstappen and Hadjar’s spraydown in stride as the celebrations continued. He could be seen laughing as he held the broken bottle up for the crowd. The moment quickly caught fans’ attention, with footage of the botched pop going viral on social media.
The champagne mishap was just one memorable moment in an otherwise impressive afternoon for the British driver. Starting from pole position, Norris overcame a difficult launch and changing weather conditions to claim his third victory of the 2026 F1 season. He finished more than 14 seconds ahead of Verstappen, who secured second place after starting twenty-first on the grid due to an engine-related grid penalty. Hadjar rounded out the podium in third, scoring his third podium of the year.
The victory also marked Norris’s second consecutive São Paulo Grand Prix win, following his triumph at Interlagos in 2025.
While the champagne bottle might not have survived the festivities, Norris certainly had plenty to celebrate. Victory tastes sweet… from what he remembers.
