Rebecca Gayheart bravely opened up about how her children are navigating the loss of their father, Grey’s Anatomy actor Eric Dane, on The Drew Barrymore Show. Eric lost his life back in February of this year following a battle with ALS. According to the star’s representatives, he made the decision to pass away at home instead of in a hospice so he could be surrounded by his wife and children all the way up until the end.
Speaking about the difficulties of grief and knowing how much to say to your kids, Rebecca sat down on the Barrymore sofa and spilled her heart out. She bravely began by sharing whether she tells her children about the grief she herself is going through.
Rebecca said: “Well I think there’s certain things we can’t hide, first of all, because kids are so smart and they are so intuitive. I think honesty is always the best policy, and I try to practise that and I try to teach that.”
The conversation continued to delve into how much to generally tell children about loss, and Rebecca answered beautifully. She noted: “I think there are, dependent on the ages of the kids, there’s age appropriate information, and I think that our kids will guide us and they will come to us and ask us what they are ready for. And if they are ready for certain information, if they can’t figure it out themselves, they’re going to come to us and they’re going to want it from us and we’re going to have to give it to them at that point.”
During Eric’s final days, Rebecca did her best to keep him grounded in the present moment. She told PEOPLE magazine that although it was “truly an exhausting and heartbreaking experience”, Eric continued to show his family his “extraordinary strength every day” which was “really wonderful for [their kids]” and for Rebecca to witness.
