Kurt Russell Breaks Silence on Accidentally Destroying Rare 145-Year-Old Guitar On Set of Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 Mystery Thriller: ‘I Could Tell Something Was Wrong’

If you’re a dedicated music fan, there’s a decent chance you ended up wincing when Kurt Russell’s character maliciously destroys a guitar halfway through Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 mystery Western, The Hateful Eight.

While the moment might prove a bit intense in regards to the movie’s narrative, what makes it even more shocking was that Russell accidentally broke an authentic Martin guitar dating back to the 1870s, mistaking the actual guitar for a prop he was meant to smash on camera.

In the context of the film, viewers might recall Russell’s character, John “The Hangman” Ruth, ruthlessly smashing the guitar of Jennifer Jason Leigh’s character after she sings a song hinting at his imminent death.

While the plan was originally for Tarantino and company to swap out the vintage Martin guitar for a prop replica, Russell accidentally destroyed the real guitar, leading to Leigh’s genuinely surprised reaction for the scene in question.

Years later, Russell spoke about the incident in a piece for Esquire, downplaying the rumors that the guitar was actually “priceless.”

“In Hateful Eight, Kurt Russell accidentally smashed a one of a kind, 145-year-old guitar that was on loan from the Martin Guitar Museum,” Russell read in the video before wryly observing, “I love how these stories go…”

“Jennifer had a number of guitars to work on this song she was going to sing,” Russell clarified. “The one particular guitar she liked was this Martin. No one ever said it was 145-years-old. At the time, it was [just] a Martin. And I remember someone saying, ‘That thing’s worth about $15,000.’ I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.'”

“Then comes the day to shoot,” the Overboard actor continued. “I knew that she had been working on this one guitar and because I’d done a thousand shows, I couldn’t imagine they would even be using the one guitar that she had been using. Not that it was a priceless Martin guitar. Because it wasn’t. Nobody said that. Nobody made that claim.”

“But when we did the take, you can even see it, I kind of give it an extra beat,” Russell added. “So I go ahead and smash the guitar. I can tell when I grab [Leigh] and sit her down, I can tell instantly she’s not happy about this. Like something’s wrong.”

“So as soon as it’s over, I go, ‘Tell me that wasn’t the guitar you’ve been practicing with,'” she said, before recreating Leigh’s dejected nod. “I only felt bad about that. I didn’t give a sh*t about the guitar.”
