William Shatner found himself making an unexpectedly dark joke about his own mortality after two familiar faces from the Star Trek universe died within days of each other.
The 95-year-old actor addressed the losses during a recent appearance, even joking about whether he would outlive one of his longtime co-stars.
Shatner made the remarks on Sunday, November 1, during his William Shatner: Live on Stage event in Northfield, Ohio.
According to CinemaBlend, which cited reporting from Cleveland.com, the actor spoke to fans about the deaths of Patrick Stewart and Walter Koenig before delivering the grim one-liner.
“I keep looking over my shoulder for the guy with the scythe,” Shatner told the audience.
He then brought up George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series. The two actors are among the last surviving members of the show’s original main cast.
Shatner, who has had a publicly strained relationship with Takei over the years, added another remark about their longevity.
“I’m not going to go first,” he joked.
The comments followed a difficult week for the science-fiction franchise. Koenig, who portrayed Pavel Chekov, died on October 25 at age 90.
He joined the original NBC series during its second season in 1967 and continued playing the Russian navigator in several subsequent films.
Stewart died on October 28 at age 86.
He became one of the franchise’s most recognizable performers through his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which premiered in 1987.
He later returned to the character in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard.
Shatner, meanwhile, became a television icon playing Captain James T. Kirk in the original series, which debuted in 1966.
Although the actor used humor while discussing the losses, he also acknowledged both performers in separate tributes.
Following Koenig’s death, Shatner wrote that he was deeply saddened by the news, recalling their years working together and praising Koenig’s genuine connection with the Star Trek community, as reported by TheWrap.
After Stewart’s death, Shatner described him as a friend, colleague and magnificent actor, adding that Captain Picard “stood for the best of us,” according to Rolling Stone.
The two actors had also shared the screen in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations, bringing Kirk and Picard together for the first time in the franchise.
