The Seneca Nation held its elections on the same day as the midterm elections. This marks the first time that women will hold all three elected executive offices in the Seneca Nation. Nation members also elected Lenith Waterman as treasurer and Bethany Johnson as clerk. They will each serve two-year terms.
In a statement, Abrams thanked those who voted and said she plans to protect the Seneca Nation’s sovereignty as president:
“The Seneca people did not go to the polls to elect a woman President today. We went to the polls to choose a President who can lead our Nation with strength, honesty, vision and conviction. That is my charge. Our people have given me a great responsibility. I will honor their trust by doing everything I possibly can to make sure that our Nation remains strong and that our sovereignty is always protected.”
Where are the Seneca Nation’s territories?
The Seneca Nation has a total of five non-contiguous territories in Western New York, the largest being the Allegany and Cattaraugus territories. The Allegany Territory includes the City of Salamanca and other areas along the Allegheny River. The Cattaraugus Territory includes Irving and areas along Cattaraugus Creek from Gowanda down to Lake Erie.
