Europe: Eurovision Sport Pan Europe Worldwide: Click hereThis Friday, the world’s top open water athletes will reconvene for the first stop of the 2026-2027 Open Water World Cup.
For the first time in five years, World Aquatics has chosen a sports venue on the west side of the Atlantic: Mexican resort metropolis Cancún.
The virtually undisputed reigning king and queen of open water swimming, Florian Wellbrock and Moesha Johnson, headline the names on the roster of athletes. Johnson, who represents Australia, is entirely undefeated in individual open water races this year, and she’s the shoe-in favorite to continue that streak this week. Germany’s Wellbrock is known for turning it on when it counts, and he’s probably the favorite for the 10k, though 2026 World Cup champion David Betlehem is a serious threat.
As the World Cup takes a rare visit to the western hemisphere, it brings out a larger-than-normal number of Americas athletes. Not least from the host nation of Mexico, who will send two dozen swimmers to compete on its shores, the most of any country by a large amount. The red-hot Paulo Strehlke will have the privilege and pressure of competing in a major international meet on home soil for the first time. Strehlke, who has trained in Germany since 2023, won Mexico’s first ever Open Water World Cup medal and its first ever Pan Pacs medal. Both those feats occurred earlier this year, so a victory lap at home would be a fairytale ending to a breakout year for the 20-year-old.
With no red-eye flights and no shortage of Cancún-bound airways, the United States is also sending an above average contingent of athletes to this World Cup. Its roster of seven includes all three of the stars and stripe’s top five finishers at Pan Pacs: Joshua Brown, Ivan Puskovitch, and Becca Mann.
Beyond Mexico and the U.S., the rest of the western hemisphere will also show out in larger numbers than usual. Be prepared to see caps with flags from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and Guatemala this weekend.
Apart from the Americas, keep an eye out for top open water names from all over the world, including European Champion Ginevra Taddeucci and 3k knockout World Champion Ichika Kajimoto on the women’s end. On the men’s side of the equation, Sacha Velly just had a standout French nationals last week with a 1500 national record. Thus, his speed should be in a great place to challenge for a podium spot, particularly in the 3k.
The most notable absences from the cup include Olympic Champions Kristof Rasovszky and Gregorio Paltrinieri. Logan Fontaine of France, the 2025 Open Water World Cup overall champion, will also be absent in Mexico. On the women’s side, most of the key open water players will be there, but Brazilian icon Ana Marcela Cunha will continue to sit out of major international competitions in 2026.
