Shades of Yesteryear: Payton and Nix conjure memories of Reeves and Elway, Tebow

Those were the days.

These are the days.

Without trials and tribulations, there is no triumph.

Without Dan Reeves’ frustratingly famous offense – often affectionately referred to as the “run, run, pass, punt” in Denver – there may never have been John Elway, at least as we know him.

In his magnificent career, Elway engineered 40 regular season game-winning drives and added six more in the postseason. Of those 46 efforts, 33 of them occurred with Reeves’ holding the clipboard. Without Reeves, there’s no “Mr. Comeback.” No “Duke of Denver.”

Don’t get it wrong, Reeves was a great coach. He made a lot of lemonade with a plenty of lemons; but he may or may not have shackled Elway throughout the first three quarters of plenty of games.

But, damn, it sure was fun, wasn’t it?

Just like yesterday; that sure was fun. Come to think of it, a lot of days since Sean Payton and Bo Nix started sharing the same sideline have been fun. These are good times.

Just like those early days of Elway and Reeves – back when Denver was so excited to unleash its newest, most prized possession, but rarely got to see it until the game dictated it in the fourth quarter – we now wonder why in the world Bo & Co. waits until the fourth quarter to shine.

Then, we blamed it on Reeves, who insisted on playing it safe rather than “letting it rip.” Now, we sometimes blame Payton, at times we blamed Davis Webb, and more often than not lately, Nix himself gets the bulk of our ire. And even though the blame isn’t as unanimous as it felt with Reeves, the results are the same: Three quarters of throw-things-at-the-TV offense followed by a fourth quarter that miraculously ends in utter joy.

Fun fact: Bo Nix has the best fourth-quarter quarterback rating of all time, a nifty 119.0.

With yesterday’s win over the Chiefs, Nix recorded his 15th career game-winning drive in Sunday’s dramatic 28-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, the most by any quarterback through his first three NFL seasons since the 1970 merger. And, according to the Broncos’ official website, Nix also posted a perfect 158.3 passer rating in the fourth quarter against Kansas City.

If Elway was Mr. Comeback, Nix is Captain Clutch.

Reeves and Payton are certainly different characters, but the fact of the matter is that they both should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Payton just won his 200th game; Reeves finished with 201.

Elway was the Broncos first and most significant invite into Canton. Nix has had a promising start to his NFL career, but he’s a long way from getting fitted for a gold jacket.

In many ways, Nix is more like Tim Tebow. From a statistical standpoint, Nix in Quarters 1-3 looks nothing like Nix in Quarter 4.

Tebow, who was limited in his ability to throw the football, turned into a magician, refusing to lose games as the clock wound down. Nix is lightyears better than Tebow, but has a similar ability to reinvent himself when the chips are down – the one trait Tebow possessed that every signal-caller would want.

Trying to analyze why the Broncos led by Payton and Nix can’t just go out and “win” a game in convincing fashion from start to finish is a tall task. It’s so tall, in fact, it’s an effort plenty of folks aren’t willing to make.

Instead, we’re all just along for the ride. And we might as well enjoy it, as maddening as it might be.
