Ultra Swimmer of the Month: Tyler Ray

By James Sutherland on SwimSwam

Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.

Coming off a breakthrough senior season at the University of Michigan, Tyler Ray has continued to reach new heights as a pro since moving to Texas to train under Bob Bowman this past spring.

Ray, 22, was on fire at last week’s U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials meet in Westmont, earning a berth on his first World Championship team and climbing the all-time ranks in the men’s butterfly events.

Two weeks prior to the Trials, Ray raced made his debut competing in short course meters at the UVA Elite Prep meet, throwing down times of 22.29 in the 50 fly, 49.56 in the 100 fly and 1:50.46 in the 200 fly, all of which ranked him in the top 10 all-time among American men.

That led into the SC World Trials, where he opened the meet with a bang.

After Wednesday night’s distance events, Ray set the tone for the meet in the very first prelim heat on Wednesday morning, firing off a time of 48.47 in the men’s 100 fly to tie Noe Ponti‘s U.S. Open Record and move into a tie for 7th all-time in the event. He also moved into a tie for #2 all-time among Americans, matching Tom Shields and only trailing Caeleb Dressel, who set the American Record of 47.78 in 2020.

In the final, Ray nabbed the runner-up position in an exciting race that saw Ilya Kharun book the win in a time of 48.45, Ray take second in 48.56, and Dressel and Luca Urlando tie for third in 48.57.

After that final, those four men occupy the top four spots in the 2026-27 world rankings, and all rank in the all-time top 10.

In the final, Kharun won in a new American Record time of 21.46, while Dressel snagged the runner-up spot in 21.62, bumping Ray down to #6 all-time, with Ray placing third in 21.95.

After the competition, Ray was named to the U.S. roster for the Short Course World Championships, and will be one of 18 Americans making their World Championship debut in Beijing.

This past summer, Ray had a successful long course season, setting new personal bests in the 50 fly (23.59), 100 fly (51.62) and 200 fly (1:55.11) at U.S. Nationals, but he’s clearly taken another step in the past few months after cracking the all-time top 10 across all three fly distances at Trials.
