IOC Reconfirms 7 Bidders for 2036 Olympic Games, Moves to Continuous Dialogue Phase

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

The IOC has confirmed that no new bidders came forward for the 2036 Olympics before their October deadline. That confirms that the seven previously-announced host nations will move forward to the next stage of the Games bidding process.

Therefore, the seven candidate cities to host the next-announced Games are:

Germany Hungary India Qatar Republic of Korea South Africa Türkiye

IOC Member Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, Chair of the IOC’s Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad, said: “This will be the first edition of the Olympic Games to be elected under the Fit for the Future changes. The strong interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics shows that countries across the world recognise the enduring social and economic value the Games can have for local communities. We will continue to work closely with all seven Interested Parties to support them in developing their projects.”

The process now enters the Continuous Dialogue phase, which is a ‘flexible, non-committal opportunity for interested Parties to explore and refine their projects with tailored IOC support, without making any formal submissions to the IOC or specifying a Games edition,” according to the IOC handbook.

    This phase

This period lasts until March 2027, when the discussion will enter the newly-created Strategic Dialogue phase. That transitional phase allows the IOC Executive Board to shortlist a certain number of the bids for more in-depth evaluation.

This intermediate phase is designed “to enable potential hosts to develop their projects in a more cost-efficient way, offering planning security for governments while allowing sufficient time to build public support.”

The leading bids will move to the Targeted Dialogue phase, who will put forward a final submission with a host election to be held in 2029.

This revamped process is an attempt to balance the IOC’s newer principles of creating a cost-efficient and cooperative bidding process without the previous process of a winner being chosen, essentially, very early in the selection process.

    Current Phase: Continuous Dialogue

Presentations to the Future Host Commission are expected this month. Parties will be evaluated during the Continuous Dialogue phase on seven main criteria.
