Johnny Depp Reveals the Challenge He Faced Starring in ‘Ebenezer’

Johnny Depp enjoyed the challenge of portraying an iconic character featured in over 100 films: Ebenezer Scrooge.

The Edward Scissorhands actor stars in the latest version of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, simply titled Ebenezer.

“Ebenezer just sort of arrived in a weird way,” Depp told People at a screening of the movie on November 1 in New York City.  “It’s kind of like the first time you put the wardrobe on, and you feel that, like with any character, that becomes your kind of suit of armor.”

Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843, inspiring over 100 versions of his classic. Patrick Stewart, Michael Caine, Jim Carrey, and George C. Scott are among the stars who have portrayed Scrooge over the years.

Scrooge’s name is synonymous with greed and misanthropy. He was known for his catchphrase, “Bah! Humbug!” as he expressed his disgust with Christmas traditions. Through the supernatural visits of four ghosts in Victorian London, he is transformed and celebrates the holiday for the first time.

Depp says his goal in playing Scrooge was to discover why he was so full of hate.

“That was the main sort of thing for me was the idea of the character,” he continued. “Where’s the in? How do you find your way in and give him a history and a reason why he is this supposed kind of just horrific miser and all that… So I, I was more interested in finding out why he was how he was.”

The three-time Oscar nominee shocked the audience at the San Diego Comic-Con in July when he was nearly unrecognizable, appearing on stage in full costume as Ebenezer Scrooge to tease a showing of the film’s first trailer.

After starring in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise from 2003 to 2017, which has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide, Ebenezer is Depp’s first major studio film since 2019’s Waiting for the Barbarians.

He directed his last film, Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness, 2024 biographical drama based on the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

Ebenezer opens in theaters on November 13. Next year, Depp will return to theaters in the supernatural revenge thriller, Day Drinker, opening March 26, 2027, co-starring Penelope Cruz and Madelyn Cline.
