ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It’s the countdown until Election Day on Tuesday. Already, nearly 55 million Americans have cast their ballots through early voting or by mail, including over 95,000 in Monroe County.
This year, all 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs. Republicans are trying to hold onto their 219-214 majority in the House and 53-47 majority in the Senate, while the Democrats are trying to flip both.
There are two local House races to watch. In the 25th Congressional District — which covers Monroe County and part of Ontario County — Republican Virginia McIntyre is challenging incumbent Rep. Joe Morelle, a Democrat. In the 24th Congressional District, Democrat Alissa Ellman is challenging incumbent Rep. Claudia Tenney, a Republican. That district includes 14 counties, including all of Wayne, Livingston, Yates, Seneca, Orleans, Wyoming, and Genesee counties, along with parts of Ontario and Steuben counties.
Neither of New York State’s two senators is up for re-election this midterm election season. Senator Chuck Schumer was re-elected in 2022, and won’t be up for re-election until fall of 2028. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was re-elected in 2024, and won’t be up for re-election until fall of 2030. However, there are several Senate races that could determine the balance of power in Congress.
