Cyndi Gallagher, Todd DeSorbo and Carol Capitani will serve as the coaches of the United States Team at the International Swimming League (ISL) All-Star Match scheduled for December 19 in London.
Gallagher, the former head coach of the ISL’s DC Trident and the longtime leader of the UCLA women’s swim team, will be the head coach.
DeSorbo and Capitani, both currently working as college head coaches at Virginia and Texas, respectively, will support her on staff.
“The United States has always set the pace in world swimming, and this coaching staff shows why,” ISL Commissioner Ben Allen said.
“Cyndi, Carol and Todd have dominated college swimming, led American teams on the world stage and coached swimmers who have rewritten the record books, and Cyndi was there at the very start with DC Trident. The second of our four teams is taking shape, and the names in the water will follow.”
This marks the second of four coaching staffs announced for the competition, with Dean Boxall, Byron MacDonald, Ben Higson and Rocco Meiring having been named the coaches of the Commonwealth team last month.
In addition to the Commonwealth and U.S. teams, the ISL All-Star Match will also feature a European squad and an “Intercontinental” roster comprised of athletes from the rest of the world.
The inclusion of DeSorbo on staff indicates we may very well see some of the pro swimmers he coaches at the University of Virginia, such as Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Alex Walsh, competing for the U.S. team.
Douglass and G. Walsh each hold four individual SCM world records, including co-owning the women’s 50 free world record after Walsh set a new mark of 22.75 in mid-October and then Douglass tied it at this past weekend’s Short Course World Trials.
Douglass also owns SCM world records in the 100 free, 200 breast and 200 IM, while Walsh holds the fastest time ever in the 50 fly, 100 fly and 100 IM in addition to the 50 free.
Five DeSorbo-trained swimmers, Douglass and the Walsh sisters, along with fellow UVA-trained swimmers Claire Curzan and Maximus Williamson (both currently competing collegiately), qualified for the Short Course World Championships this past weekend. Short Course Worlds, which will run during the first week of December in Beijing, will conclude just under two weeks before the ISL All-Star Match.
Capitani, who is the head coach of the Texas women’s team, put one swimmer, Piper Enge on the SC Worlds roster over the weekend.
The ISL said the U.S. roster, along with the European and Intercontinental coaching staffs, will be announced in the coming weeks.
