Butterball wants to solve an age-old Thanksgiving problem: Everyone wants to eat the feast, but getting people to help put it on the table can be another story.
The turkey company announced Monday, Nov. 2, that it is giving away a new device called the Butterball Buddy, a turkey-shaped gadget that assigns Thanksgiving guests simple jobs throughout the day so the host doesn’t have to keep asking for help.
And yes, the limited-edition gadget is free.
According to the company’s Butterball Togetherness Report: 2026 Thanksgiving Outlook, 85% of Thanksgiving hosts would prefer guests to offer to help rather than waiting to be asked. But only 38% of hosts said they actually ask their guests to pitch in.
Butterball’s solution is essentially a tiny turkey-shaped taskmaster.
How Does the Butterball Buddy Work?
The retro-looking Butterball Buddy is designed to be passed among guests throughout Thanksgiving Day. At various points, the device chimes and vibrates, giving whoever is holding it a task to complete.
Those pre-programmed prompts are timed to follow the progression of Thanksgiving Day, with jobs ranging from setting the table before dinner to helping tackle the dishes afterward.
Once someone finishes a task, they pass the Buddy to another guest, who becomes the next person on call when it goes off.
“For more than 70 years, Butterball has helped hosts put a delicious Thanksgiving meal on the table, with turkey options for gatherings big and small,” Valerie Saint Sing, seasonal senior brand manager at Butterball, said in a press release.
“And for 45 years, the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line has been a trusted resource providing hosts the turkey expertise they need for the big day. New this year, we’re helping beyond the turkey with the Butterball Buddy, which gamifies the Thanksgiving experience and gives guests an easy way to pitch in before the host has to ask.”
The gadget isn’t completely useless once the leftovers are gone, either. After Thanksgiving, it can be used as a kitchen timer.
How Can You Get a Free Butterball Buddy?
Butterball is releasing the Buddy in three limited batches in November, with the first becoming available Monday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. ET.
Additional quantities will be released at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 9, and Monday, Nov. 16. The devices are available while supplies last through ButterballBuddy.com.
No purchase is necessary, and the giveaway is open to legal residents of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., who are at least 18 years old. Full eligibility requirements and giveaway rules are available on the Butterball Buddy website.
Butterball’s Turkey Talk-Line Is Back for Its 45th Year
The Butterball Buddy isn’t the company’s only Thanksgiving helper returning Monday.
The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line officially opened for the 2026 holiday season on Nov. 2, marking 45 years since it began helping home cooks in November 1981.
More than 50 experts, including chefs, teachers, food scientists and registered dietitians, are available to answer questions about thawing, roasting, determining when a turkey is done and safely handling leftovers.
The Turkey Talk-Line will remain open through Dec. 24. Holiday cooks can call 1-800-BUTTERBALL (1-800-288-8372), text 844-877-3456 or contact experts through Butterball.com.
And if Uncle Bob is sitting on the couch while everyone else is setting the table, apparently there’s a tiny turkey for that now.
