“Are you a player in the Democrats’ civil war? We want to hear from you!”, Politico’s editors wrote in a social media dispatch on Saturday.
The champagne bottles may still be unopened at Democratic Party headquarters where candidates anticipate victory in the US midterm elections on Tuesday night, but to the fury of party leaders, the party is already showing signs of tearing itself apart.
Ground Zero for the Democratic Party civil war could be found this weekend in Michigan. Abdul El-Sayed, the epidemiologist who could become the first Muslim ever elected to the US Senate, found himself on the receiving end of opprobrium from one of his fellow party members.
Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who endorsed El-Sayed after losing to him earlier this year in Michigan’s Democratic Party primary, rounded on him over a third-party advertisement produced by the Rebellion Political Action Committee and funded by Cenk Uygur, the often-incendiary co-creator and host of ‘The Young Turks” online opinion network.
The ad, which purports to support El-Sayed, claims that Michigan families are having to forgo groceries during America’s affordability crisis, because the Trump administration continues to send funds to Israel “for killing Palestinians”. “Why the f*** do we have to pay for all of this”, asks a father of his wife as they decide which groceries to put back on the shelves.
“For days, Abdul’s only answer to the Rebellion PAC advertisement…was that his campaign was ‘not affiliated’ with it”, thundered Stevens – a fervent backer of Israel and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) – in a statement on Friday. “A disclaimer is not a condemnation and everyone in my community knows it”, she wrote.
Democratic Party grandees and grassroots supporters of El-Sayed directed scorched-earth fury at Stevens, accusing her of betrayal on the eve of a possibly knife-edge race in Michigan that could determine which party ends up controlling the Senate.
On Saturday, El-Sayed told reporters “that ad was not made by me, and I do not agree with the contents of that ad”. He claimed that “most people don’t care about this intrigue stuff” and disclosed that he had told Stevens to stay away from his remaining campaign events.

In the past week, President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr voiced overt racist assaults on his candidacy. Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a fiercely loyal pro-Trump Republican, even warned that were Democrats to seat El-Sayed on the Senate Intelligence Committee, he might tip Islamic terrorists off to any secret plan to apprehend them.
El-Sayed has no record of supporting terrorists, is not a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and is not called “Abdul Ramadan” as Trump claimed on campaign stops last week.
Whatever the impact of the latest flap in Michigan, it is redolent of deep divisions within the Democratic Party over support for Israel. Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat in the 2024 presidential election has been blamed, in part, on her inability to explain how her policies towards the Middle East would differ from those of Joe Biden, the president she loyally served alongside.
Left-wing progressives and members of the Democratic Socialists of America argue that the United States must cut all support and funding for Israel’s military. Centrists within the party maintain Biden’s oft-repeated position that US support for Israel must be “ironclad”.
The party has struggled even to acknowledge the wedge nature of the issue, with an autopsy into Harris’ 2024 defeat released in May making not a single mention of Gaza. “Seriously?”, asked an editorial in The Nation, a progressive magazine that bills itself as “the flagship of the left”. It argued that “too many Democrats still refuse to acknowledge how gravely the party was harmed by a failure to actively oppose genocide”.
Democrat splits over Israel and Gaza have re-opened around the midterms (Photo: Mahmoud Issa/Reuters)There are also broader internal tensions that have long plagued Democratic Party politics.
In July 2016, furious supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders, the party’s veteran socialist gadfly, clashed with backers of Hillary Clinton at the party’s nominating convention in Philadelphia. To this day, left-wingers claim Clinton’s nomination was rigged by centrists who still dominate the Democratic National Committee, the party’s central organising structure.
Governor Abigail Spanberger, the centrist now helming Virginia, has argued that she never wants to hear any Democrat claiming to be a “socialist” when they run for office.
After Democrats lost Congressional seats in November 2020, she argued that a left-wing campaign to “defund the police” proved to be a disaster for the party. “We need to not ever use the words ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again”, she told party grandees on a leaked call. “While people think it doesn’t matter, it does matter and we lost good members because of it”, she claimed.
That debate is unresolved, not least because of the triumph of so many Democratic Socialists of America in primary contests this year, and the election in New York City last November of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a DSA supporter who proudly backs the movement’s anti-war, pro-Palestinian and pro-worker agenda.
Analysts may not be wrong to anticipates internecine warfare among Democrats in the aftermath of Tuesday night’s results. For Trump, that may be one saving grace of an election that seems likely to deliver control of the House of Representatives and possibly even the Senate into the hands of Democrats.
The president may relish the prospect of offering the American people a running commentary on the battle that Democrats will soon be waging against one another. Without a swift resolution, the damaging internal feud could further bedevil the party heading into the battle for the White House in 2028.
