ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The annual Pumpkins in the Park 5K took place on Halloween morning.
The race at Cobbs Hill Park drew more than 1,400 people, including runners dressed in full costumes.
Saturday’s 5K race started at 9 a.m. on Norris Drive and went through neighborhoods around Cobbs Hill before returning to the park. There’s also a kids’ half-mile race that started at 10 a.m. between two huge inflatable cats in the park.
The finishing chute was lined up with pumpkins, which children can take home after the race. “The costume’s really what makes it, because you have the children, even the adults are playing into costumes. The pumpkins line the finish line, courtesy of the City of Rochester, and it’s just wonderful that we get the end — these children have this escapade, where they just run into the finish line and they grab a pumpkin, and it’s just fantastic,” said Ellen Brenner-Boutillier, owner of Fleet Feet.
She said it was the largest addition of the event and 270 children registered. Runners got a spooky finisher medal, and the race benefits the Rochester Youth Sports Foundation.
Because of the race, traffic was limited in the area of Norris Drive, Hillside Drive, Cobbs Hill Drive, westbound on Highland Drive, Monroe Avenue, and northbound on Culver Road on Saturday from 8:45 to 10 a.m.
