Late actor Leonard Nimoy famously played one of the most beloved Star Trek characters, the ever-so-logical half-Vulcan, Mr. Spock.
During a 1993 interview, Nimoy, who began playing the pointed-ear scientist during the ’60s series Star Trek: The Original Series, was asked about fanatical Star Trek viewers, known as Trekkies. Nimoy replied that he’s aware that Star Trek, like many franchises, has fans who vary in their amount of passion.
“We understand that there are some who have become extremely committed to a Star Trek way of life, and some who see it as mild entertainment, and some aren’t interested at all. That’s the way it is with show business,” said Nimoy, who died in 2015 at the age of 83.
Nimoy also said he felt proud about being part of Star Trek‘s long-lasting legacy.
“I’m very much aware of what it means to people, and particularly from inside the character, from inside my own point of view. I understand very, very well. I don’t take it lightly at all. It’s something I’m very proud of,” said Nimoy.
In addition, Nimoy said he understood his character’s importance to fans, especially younger viewers.
“I’m very aware of the nature of the relationship between Spock and the audience, particularly young people, because young people are going through a process that they recognize that Spock is going through, which is this process of trying to maintain some kind of balance, some kind of equilibrium between logical functioning and emotional reactivity to circumstances,” explained the actor.
During a 2005 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Nimoy, who reprised his role of Spock in several films, shared that he received messages from Star Trek fans, even decades after the original series ended in 1969.
“I still to this day get mail from people or meet people who are in all walks of life, who talk very seriously about the effect that Star Trek had on their lives. Scientists, teachers, all kinds of interesting people who will tell me about their college experiences watching Star Trek,” said Nimoy in the 2005 interview. “In some cases, how Spock or Star Trek helped them understand how to function better in relationships. In some cases, people say, ‘I’m a scientist because of Star Trek.’ Some people say, ‘I became a teacher because I saw this episode of Star Trek and I thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful?'”
