While plenty of people would be freaked out to find out that their new home is supposedly haunted, Prince William pretty much welcomed the news when he was told that his dwelling was also the residence of a ghost.
When Prince William married Kate Middleton, now the Princess of Wales, in 2011, his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, gave him a country house as a wedding present. Anmer Hall, as its called, is a Georgian mansion in Norfolk, England, on the royal family’s Sandringham Estate.
“When the Prince of Wales and Princess of Wales moved into Anmer Hall, … there was a ghost there of a Catholic priest that lived there and was hanged, drawn and quartered for high treason, and for some reason, has returned to his home,” paranormal historian Richard Felix said on an episode of “Hello! A Right Royal Podcast.”
“Although he was executed in York, they’ve actually heard his voice,” Felix, who is also a ghost tour guide, added. “And they have seen the ghost of what they say is a priest, wandering around Anmer Hall.”
The paranormal expert also revealed how the abode’s new owner reacted to the news that they could be living alongside a restless spirit, saying, “Before the Waleses moved in, they were warned about the ghost and the comment was, I presume it was from Prince William, he said, ‘No old hall would be complete without a ghost, would it?’”
Anmer Hall’s ghost is likely St Henry Walpole, according to People. A “Jesuit martyr, [who] was hanged, drawn and quartered in the city of York,” he was “accused of treason on three counts: that he ‘had abjured the realm without licence; that he had received holy orders overseas; and that he had returned to England as a Jesuit priest to exercise his priestly functions,'” The Tudor Society notes. “Walpole was beatified in 1929 and canonised in 1970 by Pope Paul VI.”
Now, it’s thought he spends his afterlife haunting his family’s former home, Anmer Hall, with his ghost occasionally being spotted at the now-royal residence.
