For patients recovering from a stroke, brain injury and other neurological condition, rehabilitation is an essential part of their healing. At Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, a rare program includes man’s best friend.
Milo is a Native American Indian dog who this week was working with two recent stroke patients.
“Milo is very motivated by treats,” said Bill Egan with Rainbow Assisted Animal Therapy Dogs. “When he sees the bag come out, his vest go on, he knows it’s time to go work. He’s like a different dog. And he’s prepared. He’s been very well trained. He loves to be with people.”
Alyssa Jacobs is an occupational therapist who works with Milo.
“We get a lot of different diagnoses here, big ones, we get our neurological stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, we have transplants, we get orthopedic injuries, all sorts of things,” said Jacobs. “Any one of those diagnoses can cause a major change in your day-to-day life.
Jacobs said she can modify just about anything they do with Milo to fit a patient’s specific condition.
“What’s really nice about him is he’s able to do so many things,” she explained. “We have so many tools here and equipment available that with any patient, we can think sitting, we can it standing. They can walk with Milo. We’ve had some patients do that if they’re able. So we did some brushing with him today as you guys saw. So patients, if they can brush Milo, you can hold a brush and brush your own hair. They used utensils to feed Milo with a fork. That’s something you’re going to do…For the hospital to allow us to kind of have this program become successful is really, great. It would also be great for us to expand it.”
Angel Miranda had a stroke 15 days ago.
“I think it was wonderful because I got a chance to pet Milo and actually, I was able to use my arm a little bit,” said Miranda.
“When I walk out of here, I feel great,” Egan said. “That’s the medicine that I get out of this. I feel so good when I leave after a program up here in physical recovery.”
