OMG! Budda Baker Takes Trade Deadline Questions In Full Halloween Costume

Happy Halloween Eve, friends!

Budda Baker, a safety on the Arizona Cardinals, showed he is in the holiday spirit by showing up to his Friday media availability in full costume and answering questions.

    ‘Tis the season:

This is so surreal (and hilarious) to watch:

Reporter: “Budda, I know you talked about this a little bit earlier in the week. But obviously, as we near the trade deadline, your name seems to be a name that pops up here and there in speculation. How do you look at that? How do you think about all that stuff?”

Baker: “Yeah, I just live in the present. You know, like today, having a great time with you guys and gonna have a great Friday practice and just focus on playing against the Dallas Cowboys and trying to get a W at their stadium.”

Watching Budda Baker stay in character during his whole press conference and answering questions is one of the best things I’ve seen anywhere. It certainly has put me in the Halloween spirit!

On its own, Budda Baker fielding questions about the upcoming NFL Trade Deadline is worthy of a post. But also, Baker doing so while in a full Halloween costume amplifies the post-worthiness. And when you add that Baker was deemed to be a good fit as a Chicago Bears trade target, it makes it an easy layup of a post for me. This was a no-brainer.

In case you missed it, colleague Patrick K. Flowers began the week with a list of 17 potential Bears trade targets ahead of the Nov. 10 deadline. We’ve seen a few of those names fall off the board to other NFC rivals. And one of those names, defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, is now on Chicago’s football team. I hadn’t thought about safety being a position this front office needs to target, but I suppose it makes sense. This is what Patrick had to say about the possibility of Budda Baker as a fit:

Baker is another intriguing name for me, because he’s a splashy play-making safety, a profile that fits in Dennis Allen’s defense. He has four sacks as a safety through Week 7. He would cost the acquiring team roughly $7.34 million this season, and has a $20.89 million cap hit in 2027, though there’s no guaranteed money in the final year of his deal next year.

Hey, the Bears’ defensive coordinator already got one early Christmas gift. Why not another?

How the team feels about Coby Bryant’s recovery from his stint on injured will play a huge role in if the team targets safety help at the 2026 NFL Trade Deadline. If the coaching staff, front office, and medical team feel good about Bryant’s return, then I would say that it is unlikely the Bears pull off a trade for Baker or any other safety, for that matter. But if there is (1) doubt that Bryant will return this season and (2) a belief that upgrading at safety would put this defense over the top, then I can see a path to adding some help at the position.

At some level, the Bears value a veteran presence in the back end of the secondary. Otherwise, they would not have brought in Xavier Woods as a stop-gap option after Bryant went down with his injury. So while that experiment didn’t have a desired ending, I’m not sure it will stop the team from considering external options to fortify the back end of the defense. That said, after hearing how Bears General Manager Ryan Poles is valuing picks right now, I don’t think he is too keen on dumping the war chest for short-term stop-gaps. Nevertheless, we’ll continue monitoring Budda Baker’s name in trade rumors.
