The water treatment plant serving Pittsboro is temporarily offline due to damage to one of its intake lines caused by utility work.
TriRiver Water, which runs the town’s water and sewer options, issued an alert at 3:30 p.m. on Friday saying repairs are needed to the raw water line that serves the Pittsboro Water Filtration Facility, which is in Bynum near the Haw River. Spokesperson for the Town of Pittsboro, Caitlin Murphy, confirmed the damage was caused by contractors with AT&T earlier in the day.
Because water treatment plant is not receiving any new water from the river, customers are asked to conserve “as much water as possible” as crews investigate the damage and begin repairs, according to TriRiver Water. Any water currently being used is already treated and stored in the tanks and distribution system — giving the area several hours worth of water. But reducing water use will preserve that treated, cleaner supply until the filtration facility comes back online. TriRiver recommended limiting water use to “essential needs” and to postpone laundry, dishwashing, irrigation and other activities that use large amounts of water at once.
The damage caused by AT&T comes after the Pittsboro community suffered disruptions earlier in the week from another utility company’s construction work. The installation of Google Fiber by the contractor Hyper Works caused a pair of breaks on Monday — to a gas line in the Chatham Forest neighborhood and a water line on East Street — after causing damage to a gas line in Chatham Forest on Friday, October 23. The sequence of events led the Town of Pittsboro to issue a stop work order to the company on Monday through Monday, November 2, when town officials will publicly meet with Google Fiber and Hyper Works representatives about the work conducted and compliance requirements.
Murphy confirmed to Chapelboro that AT&T’s contractors are now part of that Monday meeting as well, and have been asked to halt any operations until then. She also said, to the town’s knowledge, Hyper Works crews have ceased operations outside of some cleanup done on Tuesday after the stop work order was issued. The meeting will begin at 7:30 a.m. outside Pittsboro Town Hall at 287 East Street.
