The Chicago Bears have a new defensive tackle.
And he has a new number.
Jeffery Simmons, who wore No. 98 while with the Tennessee Titans, is switching it up now that he is on the Bears. He will wear No. 99 when he debuts for Chicago’s football team, presumably on Monday Night Football when the squad travels to face the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks:

To say that Simmons was wildly successful wearing No. 98 during his eight seasons with the Titans would come off sounding like an understatement.
He had four Pro Bowl seasons, was named second-team All-Pro twice, and is coming off a first-team All-Pro campaign in 2025. I’m sure that number means something to him, given that he has racked up 46.5 sacks, 72 tackles-for-loss, and 96 quarterback hits in the 106 games he has played. But that number is already being worn by Montez Sweat, who was his teammate in college at Mississippi State. While at MSU, Simmons wore No. 94. However, that number is being worn by Austin Booker. As for No. 99, that number was out of commission after Chicago traded defensive lineman Gervon Dexter Sr. to the Atlanta Falcons.

Mandatory Credit: Steve Roberts-Imagn ImagesThis feels like a good time to share some names of notable players who have worn No. 99 for the Bears. Using Pro-Football-Reference’s Approximate Value metric, which is a catch-all stat intended to capture a player’s contributions in one number, these are the five best Bears to wear the No. 99:
Dan Hampton, 1979-1990 (125 AV) Jim Flanigan, 1995-2000 (45 AV) Gervon Dexter Sr., 2023-2025 (18 AV) Tank Johnson, 2004-2006 (12 AV) Trevis Gipson, 2020-2022 (9 AV)CHECK OUT OUR JEFFERY SIMMONS TRADE COVERAGE
Hampton, a Hall of Famer who helped re-define defensive line play in the 1980s, is the gold standard of Bears who have worn that number. Jim Flanigan had a few good seasons. We saw what Dexter did while in Chicago. Remember Tank Johnson? That was a blast from the past. As was Trevis Gipson, but for different reasons. Other Bears who have worn No. 99 include Lamarr Houston (2014-17), Shea McClellin (2012-13), Aaron Lynch (2018-19), and Gaines Adams (2009).
Save for Hampton, the No. 99 doesn’t have a rich history. That said, I look forward to Jeffery Simmons adding to the lore.
