Alcantara Blowing Up, Future Role, Martin’s Progress, Austin, Assad, Radio, and Other Cubs Bullets

Trick or Treat was last night for us, and I got HOOKED up. There’s certain candy a couple of the kiddos can’t have, but I CAN, which effectively makes me the trick or treater for about 1/5 of the time. My Reese stash overfloweth …

I would not go so far as to say that Kevin Alcantara will enter 2027 with a chance to win a starting outfielder job on the big league Cubs, even after the departures of Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki. I think the team will have to prepare its roster in such a way as to make sure they’re a little more covered than that in the corner outfield spots. That there’s a little more certainty, I mean. But I do think Alcantara will enter 2027 with a chance to win some playing time and a semi-regular role. His offensive talent is a factor there, obviously, but so is his ability to play all three outfield spots capably. If the bat does enough, then he’s a near-perfect 4th outfielder fit for this team. The main reason Alcantara will get a shot to win some kind of job, though? He’s out of minor league options, so either he makes the 26-man roster out of Spring Training or he hits waivers. And a 24-year-old who plays great defense, has notable upside and has hit at Triple-A, is very unlikely to clear waivers entirely. You’d hate to lose him for nothing when he might otherwise be at least a nice bench player in the short-term. For now, Alcantara is playing in the Dominican Republic and hitting bombs:

    — LIDOM (@LIDOMRD) October 30, 2026 It hasn’t even been two weeks yet in LIDOM, but Alcantara is absolutely RAKING. That’s already his third homer, and he’s got an OPS pushing 1.500. Tyler Austin, who’d signed out of Japan and whose team control situation was therefore a little fuzzier than usual, is not listed among the freshly-arrived Cubs free agents (either on the team transactions page or on the MLBPA announcement). So he may indeed be arbitration-eligible, though he’s now 35 and coming off a season entirely lost to a knee injury that, as of Spring Training, wasn’t expected to be a season-long issue. Not sure he’ll be tendered, in which case, he’d become a free agent anyway. That’s not to say the Cubs might not still want to bring him back as a right-handed power option off the bench. He raked in Japan. A really enjoyable profile video on Cubs lefty Riley Martin, who was looking like a breakout in the Cubs’ bullpen early on, but whose season ended before May with a grade two flexor strain: As Martin says in the video, the good news is that he’s now feeling like himself again (there were no setbacks in the process, it was just that his flexor tendon took longer to heal), and he should be able to have a normal offseason. Always hard to say what a guy will pitch like coming back from a long-term injury, and also hard to say whether Martin would be able to repeat his small-sample success in any case. But the stuff looked good, and I’m very glad the Cubs will have him as an option. We’ve long wrestled with the questions of how Javier Assad gets his results and at what point the disconnect with his peripherals becomes unsustainable, but I keep landing on some combination of his wide range of usable pitches and deception (well, and typically having a great defense behind him):

An “out-getter” to the highest degree. Since 2022 (Min. 200 IP), Javier Assad’s -1.24 ERA-xERA gap is the 2nd highest in baseball. Season after season, you can expect him to throw Tijuana fastballs and eat innings. t.co/fxTtaPpmqp

    — Northside Soundtrack (@CHC_DataDrive) October 29, 2026 However he does it, the Cubs need him to keep doing it. Assad is currently the “best” and healthiest returning starting pitcher on the roster! David Samson is getting a lot of grief for this, and I’m certainly not going to defend him, but I do think some folks have missed what he was saying:

@DavidPSamson says MLB no longer needs radio: "We don’t need baseball on radio anymore." The former Marlins president predicts on Nothing Personal that "radio will go the way of Kodak and Blockbuster." @JohnMamola has more. #MLB t.co/QoDpYa5mEo

    — Barrett Media (@Barrett_Media) October 28, 2026 If you actually see his full comments, Samson seems only to be saying that radio – very specifically AM radio – is eventually going to go away. He wasn’t saying that the audio experience of baseball should or would go away (because THAT would be really nuts to suggest – there are so many games, and the experience can sometimes be passive, so it’s perfect for audio). He seems to think it has to go in other technical directions than radio. I think he’s probably right about that eventually, but he misses the mark in thinking that literally only very old people listen to games on the radio because they grew up doing so (as a requirement of the then-available technology). Plenty of folks who grew up in the internet era still access the radio sometimes because it’s always there and it’s free. Building at an organizational level requires more than just a poach or two (good as those may be):

Exactly. Hiring by brand has a very mixed track record. It’s funny to see people get excited when their team hires someone from certain clubs, as if they know anything about them. It’s so much more complex than that. And I’ll remind people that several people who get these jobs are endorsed by their current bosses because those bosses want them out. It’s a cutthroat business.

    — Zack Scott (@ZackScottSports) October 30, 2026 The last bit there from Scott that gets cut off in the embed: “And I’ll remind people that several people who get these jobs are endorsed by their current bosses because those bosses want them out. It’s a cutthroat business.” He adds in a follow-up: “It happens a lot, but I understand why people find it hard to believe. It’s a small, hypercompetitive industry, so POBO/GMs will sell their credibility for two wins—the optics of helping their ‘friends’ and clearing out toxicity to open opportunities for someone they like and actually want to keep.” The 2021 version of William Contreras on the Braves is apparently a Mandela Effect situation:

William and Willson Contreras become the 10th set of brothers to play in the World Series on a championship-winning team! ? And they did it 10 years apart! t.co/0VjIK5vu20

    — MLB (@MLB) October 29, 2026 (Arguably, MLB gets around it by using the word “play” in the World Series – Contreras was on the team, but did not appear in the World Series – but I will never pass up the opportunity for a Mandela Effect reference!) What a find. Apparently this was the day after the corked bat:
