Mumbai Indians (MI) have emerged as the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most valuable franchise, with an enterprise valuation of $2.1 billion, according to Sportico. Notably, the average IPL team is now worth $1.7 billion, while every franchise has crossed the $1.5 billion mark.
The IPL has grown from an eight-team competition into a major global sports property since its launch in 2008. The original franchises were sold for a combined $724 million, with bids ranging from $67 million for Rajasthan Royals (RR) to $112 million for Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians are the league’s most valuable franchise, with a valuation of $2.1 billion. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are valued at $1.75 billion, while Kolkata Knight Riders are worth $1.73 billion. Delhi Capitals (DC) are valued at $1.70 billion.
A consortium involving Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, Aditya Birla Group, and Times of India Group acquired Royal Challengers Bengaluru for $1.78 billion in March. The deal includes the men’s IPL franchise and its Women’s Premier League team. Sportico values RCB at $1.85 billion.
Two months later, a consortium led by Lakshmi Mittal, with Adar Poonawalla also involved, acquired Rajasthan Royals (RR) for approximately $1.65 billion.
The IPL’s current valuations represent an increase of nearly 1,800% from the average franchise value in 2008. Limited availability of franchises has further strengthened investor demand, with no further expansion currently in sight.
Lucknow Super Giants are reportedly exploring a 15% to 20% stake sale at an enterprise valuation of $1.5 billion to $2 billion. Kolkata Knight Riders are also reportedly seeking a buyer for a 20% stake at a $1.8 billion valuation.
IPL’s Centralized Revenue Model Drives $1.7 Billion Average Valuation
Around 75% of IPL franchise revenue comes from central distributions managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The model is largely supported by the BCCI’s five-year, $6.2 billion broadcast-rights package covering the 2023–27 cycle, signed in 2022.
After production costs, the BCCI retains half of the media-rights fees and distributes about 90% of the remaining amount, along with other league-level earnings, equally among the 10 franchises. The remaining 10% is allocated based on performance.
Under the current broadcast deal, central distributions provide each team with approximately $50 million to $55 million annually. With no relegation, franchises can rely on these recurring payments.
Teams also generate income from ticket sales and sponsorship agreements. Sportico estimates that average franchise revenue reached $74.4 million during the 2026 season.
The league’s average revenue multiple is 22.9, the highest among major global sports leagues. It compares with 14.6 for the NBA and 12.7 for the NFL. The IPL’s multiples fall within a relatively narrow range of 22 to 24.
IPL Franchises Eye Further Growth as Media Rights Near Renewal
The IPL’s financial structure also helps control operating costs. The player salary cap stood at approximately $16 million for the 2026 season, while franchises avoid major capital expenditure by playing at state-owned and operated venues.
Investors are also betting on the league’s potential to expand its audience and broadcast income. The IPL’s 10 teams serve a huge cricket market in India, and the tournament drew 1.2 billion unique viewers across linear and digital platforms during the 2026 season.
The BCCI could increase the tournament schedule from 74 to 94 matches for the broadcast cycle beginning in 2028, a proposal reportedly considered previously. The IPL also has room to expand broadcast revenue outside India.
IPL founder and first commissioner, Lalit Modi, predicted the league’s financial growth after the inaugural season. “I’m no financial analyst, but given the huge success of the league, and its future potential, I would venture to say that franchisees bought assets that were heavily underpriced,” Modi said at the time.
