Authorities in South Carolina have officially closed the investigation into the death of beloved actress Hayden Panettiere, who was found unresponsive in an Airbnb on August 16.
“Based on the (coroner’s office’s) determination and the findings of the investigation, Hayden Panettiere’s death has been ruled accidental. The Greenville Police Department has concluded its investigation,” the police department said in a statement to CNN.
This comes after the Greenville County Coroner’s Office ruled Panettiere’s death an accident last month, saying that it was caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, methocarbamol, and Quetiapine. They added that there were no signs of trauma.
Police had also previously said that the preliminary investigation “has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.”
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was also reported to have joined the investigation into her death.
Panettiere was found in cardiac arrest at a South Carolina Airbnb, with medics unable to resuscitate her on the scene. CNN further reported that she was found “sitting with her legs crossed and her face down, according to a coroner’s report.” Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach discovered her, with one of them administering Narcan while the other called 911.
Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter Kaya. She had been open with her substance abuse struggles, discussing it in her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, which came out in May 2026 and became a New York Times bestseller. News of her passing was announced by her father, Skip Panettiere, who remembered her as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
