Still waiting: Union says SUNY Brockport employee German Machado remains in ICE custody and is seeking a bond hearing

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The union representing German Machado, a SUNY Brockport employee detained by ICE more than two weeks ago, launched a new campaign aimed at bringing him home.

Machado is still being held at the ICE detention center in Batavia, according to United University Professions. He has been able to contact his family and has legal representation, but the union said he is still waiting for a bond hearing.

“Herman is a valued member of our campus community, has full authorization to be working and to be in the United States. And we just want him to be at home with his family,” Alissa Karl said.

Union representatives handed out lawn signs calling to “Bring German Home” and provided a poster for people to sign to show support for Machado, along with information about immigrant rights.

“We’re going to take pictures of all of the signatures and the community support to send that to him and to let him know we continue to think about him, and we’re fighting for his due process and for his return to his family,” Susan Orr said.

The union said Machado and his wife fled the Maduro regime in Venezuela in 2016 and that he has an employment authorization document allowing him to stay in the United States until 2029. Immigration officials said he overstayed a visa that allowed him to live in the United States from August 2016 through February 2017.

Karen Kuhn, who lives in Clarkson, said it was horrifying to hear about Machado’s detainment and wants him back with his family. “This is somebody who’s been an established part of our college and does good work, and there’s no reason for this kind of treatment. It just it just doesn’t make sense. It hurts us all,” Kuhn said.

Julie Clayton, a SUNY Brockport alumna, said the support Machado is getting speaks to what the Brockport community stands for. “I think Brockport is just a great bunch of people. And really love freedom and hate for this to happen to anybody. In Brockport, students show their support,” Clayton said.

United University Professions also released a statement from Machado’s wife. The last part read, “We are a family not a case number. We deserve answers, due process and the opportunity to stay together,” officials said.

Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul met with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in an effort to get Machado released.
