We’re starting to see some clarity on what position group the Chicago Bears are targeting ahead of the 2026 NFL Trade Deadline.
In this clip with Colin Cowherd, NFL insider Albert Breer answers a question about whether the Bears will make a move by highlighting one particular position group, name-checking some players who could be available, and also making a note about another position the team could be targeting upgrades at ahead of the deadline.

— Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) October 28, 2026More from Breer and Cowherd:
Cowherd: Do you think the Bears will make a move?
Breer: “D-tackle was the one to me. And I really thought that (DeForest) Buckner would have been a fit for them. I think they’re one of a number of teams that are in the D-tackle market. Throw them in there with the Jaguars, the Giants as teams that are gonna be making calls around on defensive tackles. … I think there’s a little bit of a crowded market for D-tackles. But like you said, they could add an edge as well. They’ve, forever, been looking for somebody to put opposite (Montez Sweat). And the idea of bringing Khalil Mack back from the Chargers might make some sense.”
That is an interesting bit of info from Breer, who highlights the defensive tackle position as a spot Chicago is looking to upgrade ahead of the trade deadline. I know we’ve spent a bunch of time discussing the team’s need to imrpove on the edge. And I still believe that is a spot this team should try to add at before the Nov. 10 NFL Trade Deadline. But this defense certainly looks to be missing a piece along the interior of that defensive line. I never thought I’d be missing Gervon Dexter Sr. this much. But with rotational players and rookies not making the most of their opportunities, it would behoove the Bears to make a move here.

Two names that Breer brought up later in the clip embedded above are Daron Payne and Grover Stewart. Payne is a 29-year-old who was a Pro Bowler in 2022 when he recorded 11.5 sacks, 18 tackles-for-loss, and 20 quarterback hits in 17 games. He has 12 sacks, 27 tackles-for-loss, and 31 quarterback hits in 55 games since the end of the 2022 campaign. Meanwhile, Stewart, 33, is a solid middle-of-the-line piece. He isn’t a game-breaker, but could provide a higher floor than the players currently on Chicago’s roster.
Both of those players came up in colleague Patrick Flowers’ post on 17 potential Bears trade targets on Chicago’s radar. More from Patrick:
On Payne: “Payne has a sack and 17 pressures for the Commanders this season. Like (edge rusher Dorance) Armstrong, he’s 29 and on an expiring contract. Washington GM Adam Peters has some decisions to make, and flipping guys like Armstrong and Payne is probably near the top of that list. Either guy would be a clear upgrade for the Bears.” On Stewart: “Stewart is a veteran defensive lineman with a strong track record on an expiring deal. With Indianapolis firing Chris Ballard last week, I imagine the probability of Buckner and Stewart being available is pretty high.” (Note: Buckner was traded on Oct. 27.)To be clear, those aren’t the only interior defensive linemen who could be on the Bears’ radar. Vita Vea (Bucs), A’Shawn Robinson (Bucs), Zach Sieler (Dolphins), Moro Ojomo (Eagles), and Jeffery Simmons (Titans) could potentially be moved. And let’s not forget about edge rushers such as Dorance Armstrong Jr. (Commanders), Nolan Smith (Eagles), Alex Highsmith (Steelers), Yaya Diaby (Bucs), and the aforementioned Khalil Mack (Chargers). It might be a crowded market of teams looking for defensive line help, but there appear to be plenty of names who could be had in a deal if the price is right.
