After helping thousands of Illinois residents obtain REAL ID’s, a Chicago ‘Supercenter’ dedicated to simplifying the process will close this winter.
According to Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, the supercenter assisted more than 175,000 state residents while it was open, but the time has come for it to wrap up operations.
“The REAL ID Supercenter is an example of what government can accomplish when we recognize a challenge and act decisively to put people first,” Giannoulias said in a statement. “We faced an extraordinary moment at one of the busiest times in the office’s history and instead of allowing residents to face long lines, confusion and frustration, we developed an innovative and efficient solution that became a model for the nation.”
The REAL ID Supercenter opened its doors in March 2025 ahead of a federally mandated deadline for Illinois residents to obtain identification cards that were compliant with federal law.
Those cards are now required for use at places like airports and federal courthouses, and required additional documentation in order for residents to obtain them.
With the May 2025 deadline approaching, Giannoulias and the Secretary of State’s Office launched the Supercenter to help expedite the process for Chicago-area residents to get the compliant identification cards, and ultimately helped more than 175,000 residents obtain them according to a press release.
In total, the state of Illinois has issued more than 5.7 million REAL-ID compliant driver’s licenses and state identification cards, according to a press release.
According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, the final day for operations at the facility will be December 28. Employees at the Supercenter will be reassigned to other Department of Motor Vehicle locations.
